As part of the deal over the siting (France vs. Japan), it was agreed that the head of the project would be proposed by Japan, and Japan and Europe would work together on a Broader Approach” agreement. This agreement covers all the other items required to build a future demonstration power plant after ITER named DEMO such as

  • materials qualification (IFMIF/EVEDA) laboratory will comprise a particle accelerator
  • advanced plasma experimentation and plasma simulation (IFERC Center)
  • upgrading of the Japanese JT-60 Tokamak

F4E is the Implementing Agency of Euratom for the Broader Approach. The resources for the implementation of the Broader Approach will be largely provided on a voluntary basis from several participating European countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland).
